Salwar Kameez (also spelt shalwar kameez) is the quintessential Indian dress. An Indian salwar is a three-piece dress, with a shirt called the kameez, a pleated trouser called a salwar and a stole or dupatta to complete the look.
This beautiful outfit has its origins in Punjab, India and hence is also referred as Punjabi suit. A good salwar is pleated and the more the pleats the prettier it looks. It could be made in a variety of materials, like net, tissue, cotton or georgette. Each of these materials has their own beauty and is very distinct from each other.
The salwar is gathered at the waist and is held by a drawstring. With the change in fashion trends, the pants are designed to be wide, baggy or narrow. Other variations include patiala salwar (with more pleats), churidhar (salwar with pleats surrounding the ankle) or parallels (wide pants). Other designer salwar trends include pakistani salwar kameez and Anarkali salwar kameez.
It could have thread work, badla work, bandhej work (tie-and-dye) or phulkari patterns. These suits could be either readymade or tailor-made. These days semi stitched suits are also available that have patterns like readymade salwar kameezes yet can give the fit of a made-to-order dress.
Here are a few variations of salwar kameezes:
Designer salwar kameez
These are made in excellent drapes such as georgette, chiffon or silk and are usually done in brighter hues. These suits are mostly adorned with bold yet feminine patterns or very fine embellishments. These salwar kurtas have a delicately embellished dupatta or odhni and a stylish well-fitted kameez or shirt. This type of dress could also be made-to-order in net, tissue or satin and can be decorated with crystals and dainty embroidery in gold and silver. These suits also look ravishing for night parties.
Pakistani suit
A Pakistani Shalwar Kameez is made up of a long kurta, a salwar or churidhar and a dupatta. This kind of dress is more common in Sindh, Baluchistan and Kashmir. This dress brings together old world charm and modernity in one single silhouette. This variation can change the lady's entire look because it transports her to the times of undivided India. These suits are done up with long sleeves, extra-long kurta and a long dupatta. The lower portion of the dress is either a churidhar or Patiala salwar or a pleated salwar. Also, the dupatta is an essential part of the ensemble and is not optional like the salwar kameez worn by urban women today. Common embellishments on these Punjabi suits include Kamdani and Gota. Fabrics for cotton salwar or silk salwar can be stitched into a Pakistani suit.
Anarkali salwar kameez
An anarkali suit popular known as frock-style suits in cotton and net are in fashion for some time now. Often made long (approximately till five inches above the ankles) these frock-style kurtas are made tight till the waist (as tight as a corset) and has gathers like a frock below the waist. Usually these are sold with an eye-catching, contrasting churidhar and a heavy dupatta. These suits can be purchased in net, tissue, georgettes, chiffons and cottons. Nowadays anarkali suits online are made in very bright electric colour combinations.
