The traditional churidar kameez got named the ‘Anarkali’ churidar kameez thaks to Anarkali and her legendary love story. Anarkali was a dancer in the court of Akbar – the then Mughal king. The king’s son Prince Nuruddin Saleem (later known as Jehangir) and Anarkali fall in love with each other. The king obviously enraged about this orders for Anarkali to be buried alive between two walls. While the story itself is legend and nobody quite knows if she was killed in that manner or no, her choice of clothing most definitely made it past rumors.
Her gorgeous dress lost steam a little further on in the Mughal era but regained popularity in the late 50s and 60s thanks to yesteryear Bollywood actresses like Meena Kumari and Madhubala. In fact, Madhubala herself performed the role of Anarkali in the film 'Mughal-e-Azam' and the outfit reached all new heights in popularity.
