North India, especially Punjab greeted Salwar kameez with an added enthusiasm and within no time salwar kameez with dupatta became the emblem of Punjabi fashion. Liked for its archetypal comfort friendly aspect Salwar kameez had by then established itself more than being just traditional attire. There are many styles in Salwar Kameez in today’s era. What initiated as just a court costume gradually broke the boundaries of court rooms and perfumed palaces while reaching the mass, appealing them by its sheer graceful majesty and feminine eloquence. The journey was long, yet rich. Consequently, what followed are a series of styles and designs, varied materials and patterns to suit the changing taste of India. Not only Punjab, but whole of India embraced various styles in Salwar Kameez as one of the decent, dramatic and indeed royal apparel to silhouette the enigmatic brilliance of a woman.Unlike any other Indian dress, salwar kameez has transformed over time. With its pristine origin hinting at the Mughal courtroom this dress is almost synonymous with the Indian National dress along with the sari.Churidars are also cut longer than the leg and finish with a tightly fitting buttoned cuff at the ankle. The excess length falls into folds and appears like a set of bangles resting on the ankle (hence ‘churidar’; ‘churi’: bangle, ‘dar’: like). When the wearer is sitting, the extra material is the “ease” that makes it possible to bend the legs and sit comfortably. The word “churidar” is from Hindi and made its way into English only in the 20th century. Earlier, tight fitting churidar-like pants worn in in India were referred to by the British as long-drawers or mosquito drawers. The churidar is usually worn with a kameez (a form-fitted overshirt) by women or a kurta (a loose overshirt) by men, or they can form part of a bodice and skirt ensemble. Churidar Salwar Kameez is not exactly like a traditional salwar kameez. To give a different look and feel to salwar, the churidar was designed by the traditional designers which became popular in the modern age. A churidar is similar to the salwar but is tighter fitting at the hips, thighs and ankles more like leggings.Churidar kurta sets are stitched in different types of fabric: silk, cotton, chiffon, georgette and so on.There are variety of designs of churidar kurta. Traditionally, the kurta was long, below the knee. Today, the short kurta and churidar which looks very elegant and is in fashion too. With the changing times the style and shape of the kurta varies from simple one to very jazzy look. There are different neck shapes, neck depth and kameez length available in so called modern Kameez. Some of them are simple and plain with a multi coloured churni. There are mix and match combinations of the kurta and the churidar. Some of them come with heavy embroidery and rich designs which are usually worn on special occasions.
A Patiala salwar (also called a pattian walee salwar) is a type of female trousers which has its roots in Patiala City in the Northern region of Punjab state in India. The King of Patiala in earlier times had its Royal dress as Patiala Salwar. The Patiala Salwar has a close resemblance to the pathani Suit which has similar loose lowers as salwars and long knee length top know as Kameez. Over the decade the dress now is not worn by men but has classically transformed itself with new cuts and styling into women’s Patiala Salwar.
The reason why the patiala dress is preferred by most of the women of punjab and other regions of Northern India is its comfortability and durability in summers. Since the patiala salwar is very loose and stitched with pleats its a very comfortable outfit to wear. Its distinguishing characteristic is folds of cloth stitched together that meet at the bottom. Patiala salwars require double the length of material to get stitched. The fall of the pleats of the Patiala Salwar is such that it gives a beautiful draping effect.
